FUNCTIONAL MANUAL THERAPYâ„¢

Functional Manual Therapyâ„¢ is an integrated and seamless treatment system which couples mechanical treatment of the joints, soft tissues, visceral and neurovascular systems with manual neuromuscular facilitation to enhance optimum motor control and human function.  This approach is taught through the Institute of Physical Art, Inc., (IPA).  Founded in 1978, it promotes the use of manual therapy and education to facilitate optimum human function.  The IPA presents continuing education courses, two FMT certifications, an APTA Credentialed FMT Orthopedic Residency Program and an APTA/AAOMPT credentialed FMT Fellowship program.

All physical therapists at Cornerstone have participated in classes offered by the IPA and Kevin Brogan has completed the FMT certification process in 2010, becoming the first physical therapist in the Central Valley to complete the certification and is currently an associate faculty instructor for the IPA.

JOINT DYSFUNCTIONS

Large joints need special care to restore full, functional use in our busy lifestyles.  Simple exercise prescription is generally not sufficient to restore full efficient functional mobility of the shoulder, hip, or knee; from sprains/strains to early or advanced osteoarthritis.  Come and experience a complete manual therapy approach for these types of ailments.

BALANCE AND FALL PREVENTION

Falls are a leading cause of hospitalization in our society affecting not only our elderly, but also kids and adults.  Falls can affect our system long term with injuries that can affect our posture and functional mobility long after the fall occurred.  Our philosophy is to evaluate your posture and balance reactions, as well as address any mechanical problems interfering with optimal human function.

HEADACHES

There are many causes of headaches.  From eye strain, muscle tension, stress and environmental causes.  Let us help you determine if any mechanical causes are contributing to your headaches.  Our approach is designed to find and treat many causes of common headaches.

PRE AND POST PARTUM CARE

Many women experience significant low back and pelvic girdle pain during and after pregnancy.  Ask your OB/GYN if physical therapy could help with the process.  In addition, after delivery, you will need the strength and endurance to keep up with that newborn. Many pre-preganancy issues can complicate the recovery process.  Ask us how we can ease the transition.

EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION/
SPORTS PERFORMANCE

We will listen to your personal goals in regards to desired level of activity you choose.  Then we will evaluate your muscle performance, endurance, strength and recommend the most comprehensive total body exercise program to address any and all deficits that are preventing you from reaching your peak performance.
